Pasqual Maragall i Mira (Barcelona, 1941), mayor of Barcelona and president of the Generalitat de Catalunya, has been a major figure in Catalan and Spanish politics for the last forty years. As part of its ongoing effort to analyse and divulge his work, the Catalunya Europa Foundation has commissioned a new project to accompany the two already published on his figure and political activity, "Pasqual Maragall. Thought and Action" and "Maragall and the Government of the Generalitat: the policies of change". This work focuses on his commitment to the project of European political integration and his tireless activity in the international sphere, inspired by his conviction of Europe’s importance as a fundamental and necessary political arena for the future.
This volume describes and examines his experiences as mayor during the Olympic Games and in Barcelona’s international projection, but also shows us the man and political leader who was both shaken and committed to peace during the Balkan wars. He was a driving force behind city diplomacy and decentralised cooperation in the Mediterranean, president of the Committee of the Regions and professor at the Università Roma Tre, where he studied, meditated, discussed and reflected on Europe with other academics and political leaders.
